The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics
Navigating through today’s ethical challenges
The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics (Ethics Center) is a component of the St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, providing leadership in healthcare and organizational ethics in Hawaii and the Pan Pacific region. The Ethics Center serves as a resource for caregivers and scholars, and offers expertise and services in case consultations, education, and research and policy development. It provides a forum for scholarly dialog and reflection. Importantly, it serves as a conduit for implementing the standards of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic health care services.
The Ethics Center appoints Fellows who serve gratis for two years. They collaborate with visiting scholars, present community educational sessions, conduct research for publication, and supervise trainees. Robust debate over timely issues in the literature characterizes their monthly journal club meetings.
One of the highlights of the Center’s activities is its biennial international ethics conference, which has consistently drawn hundreds of eager participants and a faculty of local, national and international renown.
