Blessed and Ready to Renovate!
Now that Phase 1 of the St. Francis Kupuna Village in Liliha has successfully been completed, St. Francis Healthcare System is moving forward with Phase 2, which includes a new courtyard, senior community center, bistro and adult day center. All of these are targeted for completion by December 2016, pending approval of necessary permits.

The Sisters of St. Francis in Hawaii participated in the blessing ceremony. The Sisters in Hawaii have expressed their desire to move into the new assisted living facility, which will be in the renovated Mother Marianne Building (background). Plans call for the second floor of the assisted living facility to be reserved for the Sisters of St. Francis.
Stage 1
Lauri Rasmussen, St. Francis Healthcare System’s Vice President – Operations, who is spearheading the construction, said the first stage of Phase 2 involves demolition of the Sullivan Building basement, which should be completed by the end of February, and the demolition of the interior of the Mother Marianne Building, which is scheduled to be completed by the end of August.
“There will be major work undertaken in the beginning stages of this phase. There will be some loud noise from construction vehicles and from trash going into bins, but most of this work may go unnoticed because it will not be visible from outside of the buildings,” Lauri said.

Stage 2
In the next stage of Phase 2, tentatively scheduled to begin in March, construction crews will work on the kitchen and laundry that will support all of the different services on the campus, including The Villas, the skilled nursing facility operated by Ohana Pacific Management, which was completed in Phase 1; the senior center; and adult day care. Work will also begin on an outpatient rehabilitation center, located on the second floor of the Sullivan Building that will also be operated by Ohana Pacific Management.
Stage 3
While Phase 2 is still underway, Phase 3 will begin in September 2016. This will include more the transformation of the Mother Marianne Building. Our vision is to create an assisted living facility, from the basement to the fourth floor.
In the third stage, there will also be more infrastructure work, including the demolition of a portion of the warehouse and site work, but there will also be exterior work on the façade and porte cochere of the Sullivan Building, the façade and lobby of the Mother Marianne Building, the courtyard, senior center, bistro, dining area, adult day care. These will begin in May and are targeted for completion in December.
“This stage will be a very exciting time because this is when all of the work comes together and we’ll start to see more of the vision for the St. Francis Kupuna Village unfold,” Lauri said.
