Volunteer Luncheon Salutes Those Who Serve

May 08, 2013

St. Francis Healthcare System hosted their annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon on April 20, 2013 at the Hale Koa Hotel.  Organized by Patty Martin, Sallyanne Pekelo, and Betty Coffer of the Volunteer Programs Department, the luncheon was attended by more than 200 volunteers, St. Francis Healthcare System employees, Sisters of St. Francis, and guests.  In his welcome remarks, Jerry Correa, CEO of St. Francis Healthcare System, noted that when St. Marianne Cope said “yes” and came to Hawaii to serve those with Hansen’s disease, she became the first volunteer.  Since then, St. Francis Healthcare System has relied on volunteers to help meet the organization’s goal of providing compassionate care to those in need.

During the luncheon, St. Francis Healthcare System honored seven special volunteers with “Volunteer of the Year” awards.

Throughout the luncheon, volunteers received great door prizes, including cash prizes. The grand prize was a trip for two to Las Vegas, courtesy of Vacations Hawaii. This has become a generous annual tradition of Vacations Hawaii. The trip was arranged by volunteer Meredith Okudara, whose brother works at Vacations Hawaii. The recipient of this year’s Las Vegas trip went to Richard Yamashige who volunteers at Our Lady of Kea`au.
