Timeline of St. Francis' "Firsts" and Milestones


Malulani Hospital -- 1884
Mother Marianne Cope established Maui's first hospital in Wailuku.

St. Francis Hospital -- 1927
St. Francis Hospital opens as a 50-bed hospital to serve the poor and needy.

St. Francis School of Nursing -- 1929
A three-year course leading to eligibility to take the licensing examination for Registered Nurse was instituted here at St. Francis Medical Center. Its first class of six students graduated in 1932.

St. Francis Hospital Day Care Center for Retarded Children -- 1957
The program was a model for special education projects and State-funded day care centers.

St. Francis Home Care Services -- 1962
Understanding that people recover faster in the comfort of their own homes surrounded by loved ones, St. Francis Home Care Services has been the first in Hawaii to specialize in home health care.

Zeiss Light Coagulator -- 1966
St. Francis installs Hawaii's first "eye-saving machine" -- a Zeiss Light Coagulator.

Child Development Center -- 1968
The first center in Hawaii developed for emotionally disturbed children as a joint effort between St. Francis and the Community Church of Honolulu.

Organ Transplants -- 1969
As the major organ transplant center of the Pacific, St. Francis is the only medical center in Hawaii to perform kidney, bone marrow, heart, liver and pancreas transplants.

Executive Committee's First Female Physician President -- 1970
Dr. Carolina Dizon Wong assumed presidency of the Executive Committee in May 1970 and became the first female physician in the hospital's 42-year history to hold this position.

WATCH (Women's Alcoholic Treatment Center of Hawaii) -- 1971
St. Francis established the Halfway House of Alcoholic Women, the first all-woman treatment center in the state (in the Sisters' former convent).

Renal Institute of the Pacific -- 1971
The Renal Institute of the Pacific was formally established in 1971. Since then, program services have been extended throughout the Hawaiian Islands to improve accessibility and enhance community education. Today, the Renal Institute is the largest hospital-based dialysis facility in the nation.

SFMC's Renal Institute of the Pacific Outer-Island Outreach Programs -- 1972 - 1999
The outer-island outreach dialysis programs express St. Francis' ongoing commitment to provide renal services in emerging communities. The following facilities have emerged as a result:

Pastoral Care -- 1970s
In the mid '70s, other hospitals turned to St. Francis Medical Center for help in setting up pastoral care units.

Northern Koolau Health Education Program -- 1975
The State contracted with St. Francis for a hypertension screening program which was aided by the City & County Fire Department. It was started because of the high incidence of hypertension in rural Oahu along with diabetes and heart disease.

Neighborhood Health Center -- 1976
First bilingual outreach hospital unit in Hawaii to aid the people of Kalihi Palama.

Health Services for Senior Citizens -- 1977
Became the model for screening services offered by State and private agencies.

St. Francis Hospice -- 1978
St. Francis introduces to Hawaii hospice services for the terminally ill and their families.

St. Francis Medical Center West Groundbreaking -- 1987
A historic milestone for the Sisters of St. Francis was the ecumenical ground breaking ceremony for St. Francis-West.

First Heart Transplant -- 1987
In 1987, Richard Moreno, MD, Judson McNamara, MD, and Livingston Wong, MD, performed the first heart transplant at SFMC.

The Sister Maureen Keleher Center -- 1988
St. Francis Hospice, The Sister Maureen Keleher Center in Nuuanu, opened as the State's first free-standing in-patient hospice facility, one of only a few nationwide.

The Hawaii Bone Marrow Donor Registry at St. Francis Medical Center -- 1989
The State's only bone marrow registry was established at St. Francis Medical Center and today is one of the fastest growing registries in the nation.

First Patient at St. Francis Medical Center - West -- 1990
Following its completion in April 1990, an Ewa Beach resident with respiratory problems was the first patient admitted to St. Francis-West.

St. Francis-West Time Capsule -- 1990
Time capsule installed including historical documents and souvenirs of 1990. The airtight vessel will reopen in the year 2040.

St. Francis Medical Center - West Maternity Services Unit -- 1991
St. Francis-West Maternity Services is the only maternity services unit in west Oahu.

Magnetic Resonance Imager (MRI) -- 1991
SFMC, SFW and Castle Medical Center formed a joint venture to acquire a mobile state-of-the-art MRI unit, the first of its kind in the state of Hawaii.

Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry Expands Services -- 1991
The Hawaii Bone Marrow Registry expanded its services to accommodate neighbor island donors.

Hydroxyapatic Orbital Transplant -- 1991
A new type of eye transplant was performed in Hawaii for the first time at SFMC.

Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy -- 1991
This state-of-the-art surgical procedure for removing gallbladders was offered at SFMC.

Diabetes and Liver Centers at St. Francis -- 1995
The two centers emphasize multidisciplinary, professional health care teams working to assist primary care physicians in the education and treatment of liver disease and diabetes.

Outpatient Chemotherapy Service at St. Francis West
Cancer patients from West Oahu now have a "close to home" place to receive chemotherapy.

St. Francis Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Medical Pavilion Groundbreaking -- 1997
The groundbreaking of SFMC's Outpatient Building provided a home for three of SFMC's five centers of excellence (Mama Lau Cancer Center, Renal Institute of the Pacific Transplant Institute of the Pacific).

St. Francis Medical Center's Vision Corridor -- 1997
The Vision Corridor, the underground tunnel that connects SFMC's Sullivan Wing to its Outpatient Building, represents the first time since 1927 that the pictorial embodiment of the mission is displayed for employees and the community.

ADAC Pinnacle3 at St. Francis Medical Center -- 1997
SFMC is the first hospital in the State of Hawaii and one of only 80 nationwide to use a three-dimentional computer program to aid physicians in a more precise diagnosis and radiation treatment for cancer patients. The computer and imaging system is ADAC Pinnacle3, which creates a 3-D image of a cancer patient's internal organs from a CAT scan or MRI.

St. Francis Medical Center - West Maurice J. Sullivan Family Hospice Center -- 1997
The new 24-bed hospice serves the west Oahu community.

Mother Marianne Cope Day -- 1998
Govenor Benjamin Cayetano signed a proclamation designating January 23 as Mother Marianne Cope Day. Mother Marianne with her many accomplishments in the field of health care, is a candidate for sainthood.

Heartmate at St. Francis Medical Center -- 1998
SFMC is the first and only facility in the state with the Heartmate, a revolutionary, pneumatic-driven device for heart transplant candidates. It is implanted in the patient's abdomen and remains attached to the heart until a donor organ is available.

St. Francis Medical Center - West "Healthy & Hapai" Teen Prenatal Program -- 1998
This unique teen prenatal program was one of the top five selected in the Society for Healthcare Strategy and Market Development's 1998 Circle of Distinction competition -- (Building Healthy Communities category).

St. Francis Medical Center's Renovated Oncology Center (Sullivan 4) -- 1998
As a forerunner in the field of oncology services, St. Francis' renovated Oncology Center is state-of-the-art with bacteria-resistant ceiling tiles to provide a healthly environment for our patients. With the entire floor constructed with private rooms, it will serve as another historic first for SFMC.

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery -- 1998
The first gamma knife radiosurgery procedure performed in Hawaii at St. Francis Medical Center.

First Bloodless Open Heart Surgery -- 1999
St. Francis is the site of the first bloodless open heart surgery to accommodate the religious beliefs of a patient opposed to blood transfusions.

Deep Brain Stimulation -- 2001
Revolutionary "deep brain stimulation" performed at St. Francis as treatment for those with Parkinson’s disease.

Franciscan Vistas Ewa Groundbreaking -- 2003
St. Francis conducts groundbreaking ceremonies for Franciscan Vistas Ewa, St. Francis' first master planned residential care community in Ewa.

Our Lady of Kea`au Dedication -- 2005
St. Francis dedicates Our Lady of Kea`au, an outreach facility located on the Waianae Coast geared to spiritual healing, refuge and recreation.

Transfer of Ownership of Liberty Dialysis – 2006
St. Francis finalizes the transfer of the renal program to Liberty Dialysis-Hawaii, LLC.

The Vision – Hospice East -- 2006
St. Francis announces plans for a third hospice center in East Honolulu.

Transfer of Ownership of Medical Centers -- 2007
St. Francis finalizes the transfer of St. Francis Medical Center and St. Francis Medical Center-West to Hawaii Medical Center.
