“My aging parents want to stay at home.  And I wouldn’t want it any other way, but it’s hard to care for them when I’m juggling other responsibilities.  I just can’t do it all.”

Franciscan Adult Day Center or St. Francis Adult Day Center offers the help you need, while honoring the wishes of your parent or other loved one.

Peace of mind for caregivers

Caring for an older adult while also taking care of other responsibilities is no easy task.  Caregivers are often stretched in many different directions – perhaps working fulltime, taking care of their own children, and caring for a parent or other older adult.  The combination can be overwhelming.  With locations in Manoa and Ewa Villages, our adult day care program offers what caregivers want: help with caring for their loved one and peace of mind.

A vibrant, comfortable environment

With your loved one enrolled in our adult day care program, you can continue to work or receive temporary respite from what can be a “24/7″ responsibility.  This helps maintain your own physical, emotional and spiritual health, allows you to have more energy to be more productive, and prevents caregiver burnout.

Our adult day care program offers a comfortable and secure group setting for older adults who need some assistance and companionship during the day. Participants come together for a range of structured activities to enhance their quality of life, health and well-being:

  • Intergenerational learning experiences with preschool students
  • Arts and crafts
  • Exercise and therapeutic activities
  • Music
  • Games
  • Field trips and guest presentations

When can adult day services help?

Most participants who attend Franciscan Adult Day Center cannot be left at home alone. They have some form of dementia or memory loss or need some assistance with activities of daily living but don’t need around-the-clock nursing care.

Adult day care supports families, older adults, as well as their caregivers.

As a typical example, Sandra cares for her 95-year-old mother Cynthia, who suffers from dementia, a common condition among participants who attend adult day care.  At first, it was difficult for Sandra to admit she couldn’t do it all by herself.  Fortunately, the adult day center was just a mile from their home and has worked out well in meeting both of their needs.  Cynthia enjoys the singing and craft projects, the time set aside for spiritual respite, and the excursions, while Sandra appreciates the support to caregivers, including the center being open on certain holidays.  For Cynthia and Sandra, the other seniors and staff have become their second family.

Adult day services can help when:

  • An older adult needs social interaction to prevent loneliness or depression
  • Supervision during the day is advised
  • Assistance with meals is needed
  • Some assistance with movement and exercise is needed
  • An adult could maximize his or her quality of life through activities, socialization, and professional supervision
  • The caregiver must go to work and a safe, enriching environment is needed
  • The family needs respite from the day-to-day demands of caregiving

Franciscan Adult Day Center – Manoa

Franciscan Adult Day Center, formally known as the Sister Maureen Intergenerational Learning Environment (SMILE), opened in 1996 as Hawaii’s first intergenerational facility. The center is named after Sister Maureen Keleher, who led St. Francis Medical Center for more than 35 years and was an advocate for bringing the young and the old together.

Located in the heart in Manoa Valley on the grounds of the Sisters of St. Francis’ property, Franciscan Adult Day Center is next to St. Francis School and the Mother Marianne Cope Preschool. This provides a stimulating environment for intergenerational interaction with upper grade levels as well as preschool. The University of Hawaii at Manoa is also within walking distance, enabling university interns and service-learning students to volunteer with the program and entertain the participants. Franciscan Adult Day Center is licensed for 35 participants per day and has served more than 400 participants and their families since 1996.

As an annual volunteer project, Soroptimist International has selected Franciscan Adult Day Center for its Soroptimist Saturday of Service project, joining clubs throughout the world in similar hands-on projects that benefit the community. With help from the Soroptimists, the center is able to open one Saturday in March, allowing caregivers to enjoy a free Saturday to run errands, do some shopping or simply have some time alone to themselves. Volunteers engage participants with music and entertainment, exercise, a project and games. Soroptimists also prepare and serve breakfast and lunch and provide companionship to participants.

St. Francis Adult Day Center – Ewa Villages

Be among the first to enroll in the St. Francis Adult Day Center located in Ewa Villages. The St. Francis Intergenerational Center houses adult day care and a preschool under one roof.  It’s a great way for kupuna and keiki to share their love and energy with each other, while also meeting the needs of parents and family caregivers, especially those in today’s sandwich generation, who must care for both aging parents and young children.

In response to the growing need for community-based services for older adults in West Oahu, St. Francis Adult Day Center is an ideal solution for families living with an aging parent who needs assistance or supervision during the day.  Modeled after the success of Franciscan Adult Day Center, the St. Francis Adult Day Center provides an inviting, caring environment, where seniors can socialize with others while receiving the assistance they need. Adult day care also gives relief and peace of mind to family caregivers, allowing them to continue to work or offering a needed break from the 24/7 demands of caregiving.
