The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics

MISSION

The St. Francis International Center for Healthcare Ethics (Ethics Center) is a component of the St. Francis Healthcare System. It provides leadership to Hawaii and the Pan Pacific region in the area of healthcare and organizational ethics.

The Ethics Center offers expertise and services in education, policy development, research, organizational ethics and healthcare consultations. It provides a forum for scholarly dialogue and reflection of healthcare ethics and related issues for the community at large.

The Ethics Center interacts actively with local, national and international centers of bioethics. Its library of texts, journals, video and audio tapes provides basic information for the study of contemporary and transcultural ethical issues. Fellows are appointed to the Ethics Center by invitation and serve for two years, collaborating with visiting scholars and supervising trainees in Ethics Center activities.

As a professional organization funded through conferences, research grants, consultations and endowments, the Ethics Center serves as a resource for caregivers and scholars, especially those in Hawaii and the Asian-Pacific nations.

PROGRAMS

Consultation Services:

The Ethics Center offers advice and assistance on difficult cases encountered by hospital ethics committees regarding patient care and organizational ethics.

Ethics Seminars:

The Ethics Center provides seminars for physicians, nurses, social workers and other healthcare workers in the community. These one-hour programs are designed to provoke dialog among the attendees, and to showcase research in progress at the Ethics Center.

International Bioethics Conference:

This two-day event features an internationally renowned faculty and addresses current and controversial topics in bioethics. It may offer hands-on workshops in an atmosphere conducive to candid discussion. Participants, both faculty and registrants, come from across the United States and many foreign countries.

Visiting Ethicist Program:

The Ethics Center invites prominent ethicists for the purpose of educating healthcare providers. Our guests also meet with the ethics committees and with medical and hospital staffs. The highlight of the visit is a keynote lecture which is open to the community.

Sabbatical Program:

This program is for scholars who wish to come to the Ethics Center, usually for one to six months, to teach, write and participate in research.
