Spiritual Retreat Center: Our Lady of Kea’au

Our Lady of Kea`au

Bringing serenity to our busy lives

As a ministry of St. Francis Healthcare System, Our Lady of Kea`au located on 58 acres on the Waianae Coast, offers nonprofit organizations a special retreat center for community and business meetings, conferences, and celebrations.  The peace and serenity make it an ideal location for contemplation, rejuvenation, wellness and spiritual renewal.  Guests have access to furnished cabins, an outdoor kitchen and dining facilities, tennis courts, swimming pools, and open fields.  As an extension of service to the community, Our Lady of Kea`au also prepares and serves meals for the homeless in the Waianae area.  It also maintains a Christian homeless tent community on the premises.

A retreat center for renewal and rejuvenation

Our Lady of Kea`au Center serves as a retreat center hosting different denominations for retreats and other events such as parties, graduations, and corporate meetings. The Center is a dynamic Franciscan presence on the Waianae Coast community. The facility is used by various community groups including Youth Summits and Environmental awareness programs, for nominal fees and in-kind donations. Programs such as the Ho`omau Ke Ola program are supported through use of the facilities for various program activities and graduation ceremonies. Our Lady of Kea`au enables the Waianae High School JROTC to host the annual State Waianae Adventure Challenge, involving 400-600 cadets and their families. The Center is host to the homeless of the coastal area for holiday celebrations at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

Tackling Hawaii’s growing homelessness

Many families in Hawaii do not have homes because of circumstances beyond their control, and St. Francis Healthcare System is doing its part to alleviate this growing problem. Our Lady of Kea`au prepares and serves about 375 hot meals every week for those in Pai`olu Homeless Shelter and at the Waianae Boat Harbor.  However, Our Lady of Kea`au goes even further, inviting previous beach residents to live in a designated area at Our Lady of Kea`au called Mahina Makuahine Meleana, or Mother Marianne’s Farm.  They grow some of their own produce such as taro, sweet potatoes and cassava, and help with chores to maintain the property. The residents follow strict rules, and their lives are transformed as they learn to live in harmony with God, each other, and the environment. In addition to nutritious hot meals, hygiene kits, clothing, and other items are distributed.
