This week, Hyun Underwood, Manager – Spiritual Care for St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii, will receive her national certification as a Chaplain from the National Association of Catholic Chaplains at its national conference in Pittsburgh. Congratulations, Hyun!
Those being accredited must have taken appropriate courses and meet rigorous standards approved by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. They must demonstrate personal, professional and Roman Catholic theological competence and maintain high moral and ethical conduct, and must have ecclesiastical endorsement for ministry.
Candidates are required to submit extensive written materials for review, be interviewed by a three-member team of certified professional chaplains or clinical pastoral education supervisors, and finally, their certification must be voted on by the National Certification Commission. The certification is renewed every five years.
