St. Francis Healthcare System of Hawaii has the distinct privilege of being associated with Blessed Marianne Cope, who will be declared a Saint by the Vatican this year.  Our legacy of caring in the islands can be directly traced to Blessed Marianne, who came to Hawaii with six Sisters of St. Francis from Syracuse, New York, in response to a special call of God to care for those afflicted with Hansen’s disease.

Moved by compassion, Blessed Marianne and the Sisters headed for Hawaii aboard the Mariposa in 1883. Knowing that God was with them, they came fearlessly and unreservedly, determined to make a positive difference in the lives of all those whom they touched.

We are intensely aware that St. Francis Healthcare System exists today because Blessed Marianne and the Franciscan Sisters said “yes” and never looked back. Nearly 129 years later, that same spirit of caring continues today.  Through various programs and services, St. Francis Healthcare System cares for the most vulnerable in our community, including Hawaii’s rapidly growing older adults population, and we continually explore new ways to expand our service to others.

As we proudly celebrate the canonization of Hawaii’s second Saint, the St. Francis Healthcare System `ohana renews our commitment to our mission of creating healthy communities in the Spirit of Christ’s healing ministry.  As in the words aptly spoken by Blessed Marianne, we too will continue to do everything in our power to bring glory to the name of our Lord Jesus Christ through the transforming power of the Holy Spirit.

Please donate to the “St. Marianne Cope Education Fund.”

The “St. Marianne Cope Education Fund” was established in anticipation of the canonization of Blessed Mother Marianne on October 21, 2012.  Funds will be used to support the education of medical professionals and to continue Blessed Marianne’s legacy of caring for Hawaii’s most vulnerable, including frail elders.

St. Francis Healthcare System continues the legacy of Blessed Marianne today through hospice, home care, personal care for senior citizens in their homes, senior housing, chronic disease management, spiritual and emotional healing, medical ethics consultation, and programs that support “aging in place.” 

Make a donation to the “St. Marianne Cope Education Fund” and receive a free copy of “Legacy,” a book commemorating the 85-year history of St. Francis Healthcare System, tracing the historic milestones of Catholic healthcare in Hawaii. The book is edited by Sister Agnelle Ching, OSF, Chief Sponsorship Officer of St. Francis Healthcare System, and Eugene Tiwanak.
