What is Hospice Care?

As a program of St. Francis Healthcare System, St. Francis Hospice seeks to uphold the dignity of individuals as they transition to their final stage of life.

Hospice care provides individuals the opportunity to live the remainder of their lives without intrusive curative methods.  Instead, we provide care designed to enhance the quality of our patients’ lives, and strive to make every remaining moment with their family and friends filled with love, joy and peace.  These are often the greatest gifts that we can offer for patients and their families.

Hospice is a term used to describe a specialized health care program that provides compassionate care to terminally ill patients and their loved ones. Hospice approaches death as a natural part of life, much like birth. Hospice assists the patient and family in dealing with the complexities that accompany a life-limiting illness.

Hospice neither hastens nor postpones death. Hospice affirms life and regards death as a natural process. Hospice is not a place; it is a special kind of care designed to bring comfort and support to terminally ill patients and their family primarily at home. Care is also provided in care homes, assisted living and skilled nursing facilities, nursing homes and retirement facilities.

If you have not already done so, it is recommended that you consider making an advance directive.  An advance directive, previously known as a living will, is a document of your wishes in regard to health care.  This lets others know what your choices are when you are unable to communicate them.  It ususally contains instructions for your health care and the name or names of individuals you select to make decisions for you.
